Grenada and the 2012 London Olympic Games

Since Grena
3688257115_06203ba175_mda’s first Olympic Games in 1984, the island has competed in every summer Olympic Games. So far, there hasn’t been any medals, but this year – that could all change.

What makes this year different is that Kirani James is taking part. The 19 year old men’s 400 metre runner has certainly made a name of himself. In 2011 he was the World Champion in his event, and in 2010 the Junior Champion.

He’s going to up against LaShawn Merritt and Jeremy Wariner of the USA. Kevin Borlee of Belgium is also a contender for the 400m gold, but Kirani could well come home with the gold. He has already run the fastest 400m ever by a 14 year old, with a time of 46.96 seconds and the fastest of a 15 year old. He is also the third fastest indoor runner of the distance.

James’ team mate Rondell Bartholomew is another athlete to watch. He was running alongside James in the 2011 World Championship and could well score a place in the race.

Grenada is going to compete in more than just the track and field events. Stefon John will be competing in the heavy weight boxing arena. There’ll be Esau Simpson in the swimming sprints and of course, Andrea St Bernard in the taekwondo competition.

The 2012 London Olympic Games will start on July 27th and will run through to August 12th. We’re looking forward to watching and then welcoming Grenada’s young stars back to the island after the event.

As part of our own celebrations, we’re offering a special Olympic package. Stay for five nights (one for each of the Olympic rings) and get 12% off – a saving of $90 on a standard room with bed and breakfast. Contact us now to book.

  2. Hello DJ, hope all going good with you and thanks for that… ooops, my fault, I did research but perhaps not well enough! Thanks for clearing that up.

It was great to watch Kirani do so well.
